For anyone who has witnessed scenes from shark week, they are aware of the sensational shark tales repeated throughout the week. Whether it is sharks fighting crocodiles, sharks that jump out off water, or sharks jostling steel cages, there is no doubt a lot of sensationalism. Now more than ever, the network that hosts Shark Week is aiming to eliminate the stereotypes that our culture places on sharks. Most of this year’s Shark Week offerings have solid scientific and conservation foundations. The most problematic aspects are the ways that media frames, titles, or scores shark footage. You should watch Shark Week so you can help the series navigate toward science, and not sensationalism.
