Android Device Takes A Few Seconds To Return To Home Screen...

Okay, so I've got a question for the group. I've got a first generation Moto G running Kit Kat 4.4.4. It and the apps I have on it are always updated and have all their shots. I've also got McAfee for Android and Malwarebytes for some protection.

I only find this is a problem occasionally, usually after moments of heavy use. But when I quit something and return to the home screen the wallpaper is there but the icons and such take approximately three seconds to sometimes show up. I mean you can literally count, 1, 2, 3 and then they appear. Everything works fine, I just figure the processor is busy and needs to quit whatever app I'm using and catch up. I do have a lot of apps, mostly for video which I use through my Chromecast. But I'm wondering if I have to many apps? Or maybe something is gumming up the works?
