If it has an internet connection and says no updates are available that almost certainly means that there are no updates available (the "almost" is because conceivably the manufacturer might make an update available via their website rather than the usual "over the air" mechanism, but that is rather unusual).
The Android system must be built for the specific device, so unless either the manufacturer has provided an update or an enthusiast has built for for exactly this model then there is nothing else to do. There's no generic android update, and you can't use an update designed for a different device. And to be honest if it's still on 4.0.4 I think it's very unlikely that the manufacturer has any intention of providing an update, as that's an early-mid 2012 Android version.
