Nexus 5 (India): No Simultaneous Voice call with Data Connection

I am using Nexus 5, in India (Airtel is the service provider).

I use 2G data plan for data connections (ie, Internet access). Whenever my phone starts/receives a voice call (GSM phone call), my existing data connection breaks down. The notification icon (in the notification area) for data connection also starts showing an "!" mark with 'E' as long as voice call is active.

As soon as voice call is finished, the data connection is resumed and "!" mark goes away from the data-connection icon (in the notification area), only 'E' prefix remains there.

I am observing this problem since I bought the Nexus 5 and problem persists across Android 5.0, 5.1 and to 6.0 (Marshmallow).

Could anyone please suggest what is missing?
