unwanted notification sound for gmail

For some messages that arrive in my gmail there's a notification sound.
Where are the settings to turn this off?
Using Motorola moto e 1st generation.
I'm a newbee to smart phones, so be gentle please
EDIT: almost forgot to mention that sometimes there's a notification sound also for I have no idea what... no new mail, no sms.
