Using LG Optimus Exceed 2 as an MP3 Player

So my MP3 player died, RIP Zune. I have been using my phone and Spotify, but wanted a seperate device to use just for music, and I'd only need to use it connected to WiFi

I saw these LG Optimus Exceed 2s for 9.99 at Best Buy, so I grabbed it and a SD card and figured I'd be ready to go. When I turned it on, I realized that I had to activate it to work. So I guess my questions are..

Is there anyway around this?

If not, after I activate it, for 45 dollars, do I have to keep buying refills if I am only using it on WiFi?

Is there a better option?

Any help would be appreciated.
